Fractional lasers

FRAXEL ALONE AND IN COMBINATION WITH FRACTIONAL CARBON DIOXIDE LASER

The Fraxel laser system is considered one of the best available treatments for non-ablative fractional resurfacing of the face, neck, chest and hands. There are several different Fraxel procedures currently available to target different skin problems including but not limited to acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, skin surface irregularities, skin pores, brown spots and old scars. Fraxel resurfaces damaged skin to reveal younger, more refreshed skin, improving the overall appearance through a simple procedure with minimal downtime.

The advanced Fraxel technology offers deeper dermal laser penetration (depths up to 1.6mm) than traditional treatments, and is delivered by laser pulses in fractional patterns. The laser heats up tiny columns of tissue on and under the skin's surface, stimulating the body's natural skin cell and collagen regenerative responses. Because of the miniscule size of the heated dermal columns created by the Fraxel laser, the Fraxel laser does not damage surrounding healthy tissue, allowing for rapid healing to only the targeted area.

The Fraxel Restore laser is FDA-approved to treat:

  • Wrinkles around the eyes
  • Scarring
  • Age spots/Sunspots
  • Melasma
  • Actinic Keratoses (pre-cancers on the sun exposed parts)
  • Skin texture and pores
  • Loose skin on cheeks and around the eyes

Fraxel is a true nonsurgical alternative to more invasive surgical and resurfacing procedures, as it significantly reduces the risks and recovery time associated with facelifts and other resurfacing procedures. Fraxel can also be considered a potentially preventative treatment, as it often eliminates the need for rather invasive surgical procedures.

Fraxel treatment takes about 30 to 45 minutes to perform, and is done at Dr Khan’s office. Patients will also experience flaking with the sunburn appearance as the old, damaged skin is exfoliated and new, fresh skin takes its place.

In addition patients may also experience minor itching, dry skin, peeling and flaking.

Results of Fraxel

The results of the Fraxel treatment are visible immediately after the procedure. Patients may also experience mild swelling and redness, although these side effects usually go away on their own in a short time. The results of the procedure will continue to improve as side effects subside.
Most patients can achieve effective results from three to five Fraxel treatment sessions spaced two to four weeks apart. Patients can return to work very quickly after each of these sessions, usually after 24 hours.

The results of the Fraxel procedure vary depending on each patient's individual skin, but most report significant improvement to the overall quality of their skin, including but not limited to:

  • Reduced appearance of brown spots
  • Reduced fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduced pores
  • Reduction in acne breakouts over time
  • Improved appearance of acne and surgical scars
  • Improved tone and texture
  • Improved skin tightening

It is important for patients to take certain precautions after treatment to protect the skin and help it heal properly. Patients should avoid direct sun exposure for at least three-five days after Fraxel treatment, and should apply sunscreen of at least >50 SPF, as the new skin is highly sun sensitive.

FRAXEL AND FRACTIONAL CARBON DIOXIDE LASER

A combination of Fraxel and fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is sometimes employed by Dr Khan for a subset of patients who desire improvement in acne scars and eyelid skin tightening. Additionally, this combination can also be used to remove brown spots and smooth out fine lines in patients who can afford to take 3-4 days off of work as this is a rather stronger treatment than Fraxel alone.

Addition of CO2 laser helps to smooth out the surface of skin by creating a zone of heat injury that affects the surface as well as deeper levels of skin in the form of a column. This column of vaporized skin is surrounded by normal healthy skin tissue which allows the skin to tighten up and heal very fast over the next 2-3 days.

Patient who receive a combination of both lasers experience a rather more pronounced effect than Fraxel alone. This combination of treatments is useful for:

  • Eyelid skin tightening
  • Brown spots
  • Fine and moderately deep lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Surgical Scars
  • Traumatic scars
  • Tattoos
  • Actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous spots)
  • Hand Rejuvenation
  • Overall facial rejuvenation in addition to fillers and botox

The treatment is offered at Dr Khan’s office. The procedure takes approx 35-45 mins for full face and neck. Patients are advised to schedule a consultation appointment before coming in for treatment. At the consultation visit Dr Khan will determine if your skin is eligible for the procedure and address all pertinent questions and prescribe appropriate medications. The patients are strictly advised not to go in the bright sunlight for at least 5-6 days after the procedure and wear sunscreen SPF >50 until the skin is completely healed, which might take 5-7 days.

Fractional CO2 laser, when performed with appropriate settings for the right patient, can take a few years off of a person’s face. The results are apparent in the form of a much youthful, tighter and glowing skin; the effects of which can last several months to a year.
