Eczema

Eczema is a chronic skin disorder that involves scaly and itchy rashes especially in the folds of skin such as neck and arms and knees. Eczema is very common in infants and it usually starts in the first 3 months of life. The condition runs in families. People with eczema can also have hey fever and asthma and hives. Eczema patients tend to have very dry skin that itches. Constant itching over time can lead to dry scaly patches on skin that can become secondarily infected and can also cause bleeding, crusting and oozing.

Triggers for eczema:

The following can sometimes make the eczema worse:

  • allergies to pollen, mold, dust mites, animal dander etc
  • contact with allergens
  • dry skin
  • exposure to hot water
  • exposure to chemicals such as fragrances, soaps and certain dyes
    stress
  • extremes of temperatures
Allergy tests:

Many eczema patients have contact or inhalational allergies. Unless these allergens are identified, the treatment of eczema and excessive rashes can be very difficult. Dr Khan recommends skin patch testing for most of her eczema patients in order to provide better skin care.
