Skin Conditions at M Khan Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery

Rosacea

Rosacea is a visible flushing/blushing of the skin of the face leading to rather permanent redness. It is a chronic skin disorder most commonly seen in fair-skinned women aged >30 years. However, a combination of acne and rosacea can exist in younger patients as well. Beginning as a persistent flushing in response to stress or exertion, rosacea is progressive, with symptoms worsening over the course of years. Men and women affected by rosacea often feel self-conscious and this increases as the rosacea worsens.

Although there is no cure for rosacea, its appearance can be dramatically reduced. If you want to clear your face of redness and bumpiness, schedule a rosacea treatment consultation with Dr Khan today.

About Rosacea

No one knows what causes rosacea. It initially appears as a lengthened blush response. The flushing worsens as blood vessels become weakened and permanently stretched in the “blush areas” of the cheeks, nose and chin. The flushing becomes more pronounced and prolonged, and eventually becomes permanent. The skin grows irritated and red bumps or pimples can appear which is why rosacea is sometimes called “acne rosacea” or “adult acne.” In extreme cases, rhinophyma—firm nodules or bumps distorting the nose–develops. This condition is most commonly seen in males especially if they are fair skinned.

Rosacea Treatment

While it cannot be cured, rosacea can be controlled and its progress arrested through medication and lifestyle changes.

There are several triggers for rosacea, such as:

  • Emotional or physical stress
  • Heavy exercise
  • Extremely hot temperatures
  • Ingestion of alcohol or spicy foods

The appearance of rosacea can be dramatically reduced with vascular-specific laser treatment similar to that used to treat vascular birthmarks. Typically, two to four laser treatments at six to eight week intervals will lead to significant reduction in the facial redness. Laser treatment has also been shown to reduce the number of “acne” bumps that are associated with the disorder and to lead to smoothing of the skin by stimulating the growth of new collagen fibers in the treated skin.

If you are experiencing rosacea, it is best to treat it early to prevent the development of more permanent or disfiguring forms. Schedule a rosacea reduction consultation with Dr Misbah Khan today.
